Established streets, a large community centre and Pacific Mall close by, with big changes planned along Steeles Avenue. Here is what daily life and housing look like in Milliken Mills East.
Milliken Mills East is the largely residential side of Milliken Mills in south Markham, east of Kennedy Road and north of Steeles Avenue, which forms the border with Toronto. The community is named for Norman Milliken, who settled here around 1807, and the village later took his name when its post office opened.
Most homes are two-storey detached houses built in the 1970s and 1980s, when farmland gave way to suburban streets. Many have three or four bedrooms and garages at the front.
Pacific Mall sits at the corner of Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue, and Milliken Mills Community Centre and Milliken Mills High School anchor the community along Kennedy Road. History lives on at the Benjamin Milliken House, built around 1855 and now The Major Milliken pub.
Milliken Mills Community Centre has the Alex Chiu Pool, a gym, a weight room, racquet courts, an arena and a library branch.
Milliken Mills High School offers the IB Diploma Programme, and Aldergrove Public School and St. Benedict Catholic Elementary School are close by. Always confirm catchments.
Milliken Mills Park has five soccer pitches and five baseball diamonds, and Milliken Mills Community Park has an indoor soccer dome.
Pacific Mall, a well-known indoor shopping centre, sits at Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue.
Milliken GO Station on the Stouffville line is just south of Steeles, and TTC and YRT buses run on the main roads.
Main Street Milliken along Old Kennedy Road and the Benjamin Milliken House keep the old village history visible.
Next to Pacific Mall, the former Market Village site at 4350 and 4390 Steeles Avenue East has been vacant since the old mall was demolished. The Remington Group and Infrastructure Ontario have proposed a transit-oriented community there under the Province’s program for Milliken GO Station, with about 5,500 homes in towers of 25 to 50 storeys.
When we last checked, it was still a proposal going through the City’s approval process, so the details may change.
What it can mean for Milliken Mills East: more construction and traffic along Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road over the coming years, and new homes, shops and services within walking distance if the plan moves ahead. If you are thinking of buying or selling nearby, it is worth watching.
Detached homes lead the mix, with semis, townhomes and condos at other price points.
