IndyCar's Canadian race has a new home — and it's in Markham's backyard. The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy moved from Exhibition Place in Toronto, where it ran for nearly 40 years, to a brand-new temporary street circuit through Downtown Markham Centre for 2026. The move was driven partly by the 2026 FIFA World Cup's logistical demands on Toronto, and partly by what Markham could offer: a rapidly developing downtown precinct, Honda Canada's headquarters in the city, the Unionville GO Station for fan transit, and a city willing to sign a five-year deal to make this a permanent part of the summer calendar.
The 12-turn, 3.52-kilometre circuit runs on streets that have been resurfaced and realigned specifically for racing — Enterprise Boulevard, YMCA Boulevard, Unionville Gate, University Boulevard and Kennedy Road form the backbone of the track. The layout features a double-sided pit lane, thrilling straightaways, and technically challenging sectors designed to produce overtaking and racing action on all five competing series. Four grandstand locations offer reserved seating at high-intensity racing points: Pit Lane, Turn 3, Remington Turn 5, and Turn 8. Five general admission viewing zones let fans roam the circuit and experience different parts of the track.
The IndyCar championship context: Alex Palou arrives at Markham chasing a record-tying fourth consecutive NTT IndyCar Series championship — and Pato O'Ward, who won last year's race in Toronto, will be one of the names to watch on the Streets of Markham. IndyCar's single-lap qualifying format (Saturday, August 15) makes every lap critical. The 90-lap race on Sunday August 16 is Round 14 of 18 — the championship standings will be very much alive through this weekend.

The DTM Music Nights series — Downtown Markham's free outdoor summer concert series — reaches its penultimate edition on Saturday August 15 with The HiP Machine, a Tragically Hip tribute band. The final DTM Music Nights edition runs September 12 with a 10-piece Amy Winehouse tribute.
Main Street Unionville — a 10-minute drive from the race circuit — celebrates the Indy weekend with its own free programming across all three days. The UBIA (Unionville Business Improvement Area) transforms the heritage streetscape into a race-weekend destination: live music, local vendors, racing-themed activities, and the usual beautiful backdrop of a summer day on one of Ontario's most photographed heritage streets.
The Varley Art Gallery hosts a drop-in button-making activity inspired by the Markham Indy during the race weekend — create your own design using racing-inspired colours, patterns, and imagery. Free, drop-in, all ages. The gallery's Ride the Track 2026 experience lets visitors ride bikes on the Markham Indy track in a sanctioned ride event (check visitmarkham.ca for details and registration). Music on the Street continues both Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 3–6 PM as it does every weekend through September 13.
The summer artisan market series at Milne Dam Conservation Park returns for its second August edition on Friday — the same day as Free Fan Friday at the Indy. The park's 300+ acres and 2.3 km Rouge River trail are free on weekdays, making this a beautiful morning option before heading to the race circuit for the afternoon session. Handmade goods, local food vendors, artisan crafts.
The weekly Farmers' Market runs Saturday morning as always — peak August produce, artisan bakers, local independents. A perfect morning start before heading to Indy qualifying or the Unionville Race Weekend programming. Go early before the race weekend crowds build on the surrounding streets.
The weekly free live music programme continues both afternoons — perfectly complementing the Race Weekend on Main Street Unionville programming already running. The 3–6 PM window begins just as the Indy afternoon sessions wind down, making this an ideal post-race afternoon wind-down stop.
