🗓 The Month in Brief
Markham's Biggest August Ever

Every August brings a full events calendar to Markham, but 2026 is different in kind, not just degree. The city just became a stop on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for the first time in its history — a new, purpose-built 3.52 km street circuit through Markham Centre hosting a three-day motorsports festival on August 14–16. It's the first year of a five-year agreement, and organizers are projecting crowds topping 140,000 across the weekend.

That would be the headline in most years on its own. Instead, it shares the month with the 28th annual Markham Jazz Festival on Main Street Unionville (Aug 21–23, free, 30+ performances on three stages), and the debut of Kaya Fest Toronto at the Markham Fairgrounds (Aug 22) — a historic one-day reggae festival headlined by Stephen, Damian, Julian and Ky-Mani Marley alongside Shabba Ranks and Busta Rhymes. Layer in weekly DTM Music Nights concerts in Downtown Markham, the Main Street Markham Farmers' Market every Saturday, and two more Night at the Museum outdoor movie evenings, and August becomes the single most event-dense month Markham has on the books this year.

Four weekends, five major events, and a weekly concert series — August 2026 covers motorsport, jazz, reggae, family movie nights, and the neighbourhood staples that make Markham's summer worth being here for. Below is everything confirmed, organized week by week, with the details you need to plan around it.

📍 Markham Centre street circuit (Enterprise Blvd / YMCA Blvd / Unionville Gate / University Blvd / Kennedy Rd) · Race day Sunday Aug 16

This is the single biggest addition to Markham's events calendar in the city's history. The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy — Canada's only NTT INDYCAR SERIES race, running since 1986 — has moved from Toronto's Exhibition Place to a brand-new, purpose-built street circuit in downtown Markham, under a five-year hosting agreement that runs through 2030. The 12-turn, 3.52 km (2.19-mile) temporary circuit was built through Markham Centre with an unusual double-sided pit lane, and streets including Enterprise Boulevard, YMCA Boulevard, Unionville Gate, University Boulevard and Kennedy Road were resurfaced and realigned to form the track.

The three-day festival runs Friday August 14 through Sunday August 16, with the NTT INDYCAR SERIES race itself — Round 14 of the 2026 season — on Sunday. Reigning points leader Alex Palou heads into the weekend chasing a fourth consecutive championship. Beyond the racing, expect a full motorsports festival atmosphere: paddock access options, fan zones, and activation events throughout Markham Centre.

  • Friday Aug 14: Practice and qualifying sessions open the weekend on the new circuit
  • Saturday Aug 15: Continued practice, qualifying, and festival programming through Markham Centre
  • Sunday Aug 16: Race day — the inaugural NTT INDYCAR SERIES Grand Prix of Markham

Two-day tickets start at $90 (taxes included), with reserved grandstand and general admission options. Fans who held multi-day reserved grandstand tickets from the 2025 Toronto event get priority seat selection. Confirm the detailed session schedule, road closures, and parking/transit plan at hondaindy.com and markham.ca before attending — this is a first-year event and logistics are still being finalized.

One of Ontario's premier free summer music events returns to historic Main Street Unionville for its 28th year, programmed by JUNO-winning Artistic Director Ernesto Cervini. More than 30 performances run across three up-close stages — the Millennium Band Stand, the Varley Art Gallery, and the McKay Art Centre — spanning traditional jazz, vocal jazz, world jazz, blues, salsa, Afro-Cuban, soul, and R&B. The festival opens with a Friday night concert, then runs its full two-day program Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon each day.

Confirmed performers include JUNO Award winner Ranee Lee ("Montreal's Queen of Jazz"), soul artist U.N. Jefferson, and Latin star Amanda Martinez, among 30-plus acts across the weekend. Admission is completely free with no registration required. Free parking and continuous shuttle service run from Unionville High School (201 Town Centre Blvd) into the village throughout both days — the village itself has limited parking, so the shuttle is the easiest way in.

Stephen, Damian, Julian & Ky-Mani Marley · Shabba Ranks · Busta Rhymes · All-Ages Reggae Festival
📍 Markham Fairgrounds, 10801 McCowan Road · Saturday August 22 · 2:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Kaya Fest — founded by Stephen Marley and built around a "Education Before Recreation" message — makes its Toronto-area debut at the Markham Fairgrounds on the same weekend as the Jazz Festival, giving the city two of the most significant free-and-ticketed music events of the summer within a few kilometres of each other. The headline bill brings together Stephen, Damian, Ky-Mani and Julian Marley — honouring their father's legacy in a rare joint performance — alongside dancehall legend Shabba Ranks and Busta Rhymes.

The lineup also features Lila Iké and Jesse Royal, a "Marley 3rd Generation" showcase (YG Marley, Yohan Marley, Shacia Payne Marley, Mystic Marley, Hymn Marley and Zion Marley), plus Jully Black, TOBi, and more. It's produced by Stephen Marley's Fruit of Life Productions in collaboration with Wynn Records, Scorpion Music Group, and the Ghetto Youths Foundation. A detailed set-time schedule had not been released as of this writing — arriving earlier in the 2–11 PM window gives more time to catch opening performances.

Two festivals, one weekend: The Markham Jazz Festival (free, Main Street Unionville) and Kaya Fest (ticketed, Markham Fairgrounds) run simultaneously on Saturday August 22. They're a roughly 10–15 minute drive apart, so a full day is realistic — jazz on Main Street through the afternoon, then over to the Fairgrounds for the Kaya Fest evening headliners. Expect heavier-than-usual traffic and parking demand across Markham that Saturday; plan extra time either way.

Sat Aug 22 · 7:30–10 PM
🎸 DTM Music Nights — For Jam's Sake

A pop-rock-classic-rock blend from a band of seasoned musicians — the free alternative if the Fairgrounds and Unionville crowds aren't for you this weekend.

How to Plan Your August

Four very different pulls this month — here's how to prioritize depending on what you're into.

🏁
For Motorsport Fans
The Inaugural Indy Weekend

Book Aug 14–16 as the centrepiece of your month — this is a first-year, once-per-summer event and Markham's biggest new draw. Buy tickets at hondaindy.com in advance, and expect road closures through Markham Centre in the days around the race. If you live or work near the circuit, check the City's traffic plan before the weekend.

🎷
For Music Fans, Free
Jazz Festival Weekend

Aug 21–23 on Main Street Unionville costs nothing and delivers 30+ acts across three stages. Park at Unionville High School and take the shuttle in — village parking is limited. Pair a Saturday afternoon here with dinner on Main Street before deciding whether to head to Kaya Fest that evening.

🌴
For Reggae & Hip-Hop Fans
Kaya Fest, Aug 22

A historic, once-only lineup — four Marley brothers on one bill, plus Shabba Ranks and Busta Rhymes — makes this worth building the day around. Tickets range roughly $80–$300; buy early for a headline act of this scale at the Fairgrounds.

👨‍👩‍👧
For Families
The Free Weekly Circuit

Farmers' Market every Saturday morning, DTM Music Nights most Friday/Saturday evenings, and two Night at the Museum outdoor movie nights (Aug 13 & 27) give families a free, repeatable rhythm through the month without needing to plan around the ticketed weekends.

Neeraj Moolchandani · Kaizen Real Estate Team
"I've been telling clients all year that August 2026 would be the month that puts Markham on a different kind of map. An IndyCar circuit built through the middle of Markham Centre, a jazz festival that's been running for 28 years, and a Marley family reunion at the Fairgrounds — all in the same three weeks. When people ask me why they should look at Markham over other parts of the GTA, this month is the easiest answer I have."
