Friday, August 14 — Race Weekend Opens

Morning (8:00 AM to 12:00 PM): Arrive Early, Explore the Festival Grounds

Friday is the best day to arrive early. The crowds are smaller than the weekend, the circuit atmosphere is building, and the festival grounds across Downtown Markham are fully activated without the Saturday and Sunday peak congestion. Walk the full festival area along Enterprise Boulevard, YMCA Boulevard, and University Boulevard. Find your grandstand seats, identify the viewing zones, and establish your strategic position for the weekend.

Before the racing begins, walk to Main Street Unionville, a 10 to 15-minute walk west of the circuit's boundary, for breakfast or brunch at one of the heritage streetscape's cafés. The freshly restored Main Street Unionville, with its new interlocking brick pavers and expanded tree canopy, is the most beautiful setting in York Region for a pre-race morning. Return in time for the first session.

Friday Schedule — Practice Sessions

Practice Session 1 and 2 run on Friday. These are the first times IndyCar cars will run on the Streets of Markham circuit at speed. For motorsport fans, practice sessions provide the clearest view of driver skill and car setup, with slower speeds allowing spectators to position anywhere along the circuit's fence line. Friday tickets are typically the most accessible of the weekend.

Evening: Downtown Markham After Dark

Friday evening, the circuit transforms into a festival destination. The Remington Group's public art installations, $35 million worth across Downtown Markham, are lit for evening viewing. The Toronto Marriott Markham's restaurant and bar is the social hub for the motorsport community. Reservations are essential.

Saturday, August 15 — Qualifying Day

Morning: The Paddock and Pit Lane

Saturday morning is the best time to experience the IndyCar paddock if your tickets include paddock access. IndyCar's relatively open paddock culture, compared to Formula 1, means real access to the cars, the teams, and the engineering details that make open-wheel racing fascinating. The double-sided pit lane at Markham is unique to only a handful of IndyCar street races, providing an unusually rich viewing perspective from the pit straight grandstand.

Saturday Qualifying (Afternoon)

The IndyCar single-lap qualifying format, particularly the top-six shootout for pole position, is consistently one of the most dramatic sessions in motorsport. Each driver gets one timed lap on fresh tires to set their grid position. The stakes are high, the speeds are at their maximum, and the driver reactions at the end of each lap are genuinely raw.

Saturday Evening: Pit Lane Walk and Concert

Saturday evening pit lane walks, when offered at IndyCar events, allow general admission holders to walk the pit lane when it is clear of race cars, seeing the garage setup and engineering infrastructure up close. IndyCar's street race weekend concerts have been a signature feature of the former Toronto event since 1986. Expect this tradition to continue in Markham.

Sunday, August 16 — Race Day

Race day is when 140,000 people come to Markham for the main event. The inaugural Markham Indy is scheduled for August 16, 2026, capping a three-day summer festival.

Morning Pre-Race Ritual

Arrive at the circuit at least two hours before race start. Secure your grandstand seat. Pick up your race day program. Take the circuit perimeter walk one final time to identify your preferred viewing zones, specifically the Remington Hairpin at Turn 5, where the naming rights of Markham's founding IndyCar partner create the most photographically dramatic corner on the circuit, and the main straight grandstand where the start-finish line and pit activity are concentrated.

The Race

IndyCar street races typically run 75 to 100 laps on a circuit of this distance, approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours of racing. The first lap of an IndyCar race is its most chaotic and most spectacular, with 26 open-wheel cars accelerating simultaneously from the standing start into the first braking zone. On a street circuit with concrete barriers and tight corners, the first-lap action at Markham is expected to be extraordinary.

Post-Race Celebration and Podium

The post-race podium celebration and driver interviews are held on the main straight at the start-finish line. Stay for the full podium. The moment the race winner climbs the podium with the Canadian maple leaf skyline of Downtown Markham behind them is the image that will define this city's motorsport debut on the global stage.

Beyond the Track — Downtown Markham and Main Street Unionville

The race weekend is more than the 2.5 hours of Sunday racing. It is a three-day festival that transforms the entire eastern half of Markham into a celebration.

Main Street Unionville

10-15 minute walk from the circuit. Heritage streetscape restored with new interlocking brick, expanded tree canopy, and cafés perfect for pre- or post-race meals.

Downtown Markham Public Art

$35 million in Remington Group commissioned installations across the district. Lit for evening viewing during race weekend.

Toronto Marriott Markham

The social hub for the motorsport community on Friday and Saturday evenings. Restaurant, bar, and outdoor terrace. Reservations essential.

Highway 7 Corridor Restaurants

T&T Supermarket food hall, CF Markville dining, and the growing restaurant scene along Enterprise Boulevard. Something for every appetite.

After the Chequered Flag — Extending the Day

With 140,000 people departing simultaneously, the immediate post-race transit crush is predictable. The strategic move is to stay in Downtown Markham for one to two hours after the race, walking the festival grounds, exploring the $35 million public art collection, and experiencing the celebratory atmosphere before heading to the GO Train or your vehicle. The crush will have cleared substantially within 90 minutes of the chequered flag.

For visitors who want to extend the day further, dinner at one of Downtown Markham's restaurants or a walk to Main Street Unionville for the Sunday evening atmosphere is genuinely worth doing. The city has spent months preparing for this weekend. The Sunday evening after the race will be one of the most memorable evenings Downtown Markham has ever hosted.
