Halloween in Markham 2026: Events, Trick-or-Treating & Where to Go

Short Answer

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year (October 31), which means a full day of fun in Markham. Head to Main Street Markham for free daytime trick-or-treating from noon to 3 p.m., then walk through Pumpkins After Dark at the Markham Museum that evening, its final night of the season. Door-to-door trick-or-treating has no official city-wide hours, but most families head out between about 5 and 8 p.m.

Few nights show off a community like Halloween. Porch lights glow, kids race down the sidewalks, and neighbours trade candy and small talk at the door. Markham does it well, with family events, a classic Main Street trick-or-treat and plenty of streets made for going door to door.

Here is your 2026 guide: events in and around Markham, haunts for older kids, safety tips and what makes a street great for trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-Treating in Markham: What to Know

There is no official city-wide trick-or-treat schedule in Markham. Families simply head out as it gets dark, and with Halloween on a Saturday, expect busy streets from late afternoon. The sun sets around 6:10 p.m., so younger children often start around 4:30 or 5 p.m., and most streets quiet down by about 8 p.m.

Good to Know

Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, so everyone gets an extra hour of sleep after the big night. A small silver lining after all that candy.

Halloween Safety Tips for Markham Families

Be Seen

Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and bags, and carry a flashlight. Lighter colours stand out better after dusk.

Costumes That Fit

Pick costumes that will not trip little feet. Choose face paint over masks that block vision, and check hems before you leave.

Stick to Lit Homes

Visit houses with porch lights on, stay on sidewalks, and cross at corners. Younger children should always go with an adult.

Drive Slowly

Slow down on residential streets and take extra care backing out of driveways between 5 and 8 p.m. Excited kids will not always look both ways.

Check the Candy

Read labels for allergens before kids dig in, and keep a few non-food treats on hand, such as stickers or small toys.

Pets and Noise

Keep pets indoors and away from the front door. Fireworks and costumed visitors can be stressful for animals.

Fireworks Rules

In Markham, family fireworks need a City permit on every day except Victoria Day, Canada Day and the day before each, so Halloween fireworks need one. Apply online at least seven days before, set them off only on private property with the owner’s permission, and never in City parks, fields or roads. Soak used or unused fireworks in water overnight and put them in your household garbage, never in the Blue Bin. See the City of Markham family fireworks permit page for current rules.

Where to Go Trick-or-Treating in Markham

The best door-to-door streets are usually the ones with sidewalks, low traffic and homes close together, so you can visit more doors with less walking. These Markham neighbourhoods are popular for exactly those reasons:

UnionvilleWalkable, tree-lined streets and a historic village core. Pair a Main Street Unionville stroll with door-to-door trick-or-treating nearby.
Berczy VillageEstablished streets in quiet loops, with plenty of parks.
CornellA planned community with sidewalks throughout, and many homes with rear-lane garages, so front porches face the street.
WismerNewer streets with homes close together, so you can cover many doors quickly.
GreensboroughNewer streets with sidewalks and parks close by.
CathedraltownGeorgian-style streets and parks around the cathedral.
Angus GlenLarger homes on bigger lots. Plan for a bit more walking between doors.

Insight for Buyers

Halloween is a free neighbourhood test drive. Walk a street after dark and notice the details: Are porch lights on and decorations out? Are there sidewalks and streetlights? How fast does traffic move? Do neighbours stop and chat? You will learn more in one evening than in a dozen daytime showings.
