31 Days of Events 4 Signature Festivals Free & Family-Friendly Picks

Whether you're a Markham homeowner planning a weekend, a buyer getting to know a neighbourhood before your next move, or just looking for something to do close to home, July delivers a packed calendar. Here's what's happening around Markham this month, organized by weekend and by category so you can plan ahead.

Why Summer Reveals Markham's Liveability Most Clearly

Winter tells you how a home looks. Summer tells you how a neighbourhood lives. It's the season when the things that actually shape day-to-day life — how far the farmers' market is from your front door, whether the kids can walk to a splash pad, if there's a patio you can get to without moving the car — stop being theoretical and become part of your week.

July in Markham is a good stress test for exactly that. A calendar this full only works if the infrastructure behind it does too: parks that can host a festival crowd, a downtown core built for foot traffic, trails that connect neighbourhoods instead of dead-ending at a highway. When you're touring a home or comparing streets, the summer events calendar is worth a look — it's a fast way to see how connected a community actually is.

Walkability

Unionville and Downtown Markham both host recurring events precisely because they're dense enough to walk between a patio, a gallery, and a bandstand in one evening.

Green Infrastructure

Rouge National Urban Park, Milne Dam, and Toogood Pond aren't just scenery — they're the trail network that makes car-free summer weekends possible.

Community Investment

Free, city-run programming — Canada Day, the farmers' market, museum movie nights — signals a municipal budget that prioritizes shared public life.
