The Short Answer
Boxgrove (also written Box Grove) is a family neighbourhood in east Markham, around Ninth Line and 14th Avenue, south of Highway 407. Most homes were built from the late 1990s onward on former farm and golf course land, including the Legacy and Rouge-Fairways communities. Families value its detached homes, three elementary schools, Boxgrove Centre and the SmartCentres plaza on Copper Creek Drive, and direct access to Bob Hunter Memorial Park in Rouge National Urban Park. The trade-offs are limited transit, so most residents drive, and a busy Highway 407 interchange at peak times.

Where Boxgrove Is and How It Grew
Boxgrove sits in east Markham, with Highway 407 to the north, the Rouge River valley and golf courses to the west, and Bob Hunter Memorial Park in Rouge National Urban Park to the east. It includes several smaller communities, including Legacy, Rouge-Fairways and Boxgrove Village.
The area has deep roots. William Beebe was the first European settler in 1815. The hamlet was registered as Sparta around 1850 and renamed Box Grove in 1867, when it received a post office. Mills along the Rouge River once powered the local economy. In 1950, part of the land became a golf course, later bought by IBM in 1967. In 1997, part of that course was sold for the Legacy residential development, and the City took the valley portion, now Markham Green Golf Club. Homes have been built steadily since the late 1990s.

Neeraj Moolchandani on Homes That Back Onto Green Space
Neeraj Moolchandani, REALTOR® at Kaizen Real Estate, looks closely at Boxgrove homes that back onto parks, ravines or the Rouge valley, because those lots often attract the most interest.
He checks whether any part of the lot is regulated by the conservation authority, how the yard drains, and whether a trail entrance nearby means more foot traffic. Buyers love the view, and they deserve the full picture too.
Schools
- Legacy Public School (York Region District School Board, kindergarten to Grade 8)
- Boxwood Public School (York Region District School Board, kindergarten to Grade 8)
- Sir Richard W. Scott Catholic Elementary School (York Catholic District School Board, kindergarten to Grade 8)
Secondary school assignments depend on the exact address. Confirm attendance areas with each board’s school locator before you buy, because boundaries can change as new homes are built. For more, see the best schools in Markham.
Parks, Trails and the Rouge
Boxgrove’s biggest lifestyle advantage is its location beside Rouge National Urban Park. Bob Hunter Memorial Park on the east edge is a gateway to trails, forest and farmland. Parks Canada lists its parking lot as opening at 8 a.m.
Within the neighbourhood, residents use Box Grove Community Park, Legacy Park, Tomlinson Park, Old Mill Pond Park and a network of smaller parkettes and paths. For more walks nearby, see fall walks and trails near Markham.

For everyday shopping, Boxgrove Centre near the Box Grove Bypass and Copper Creek Drive has a Longo’s grocery store, a pharmacy, banks, coffee and a medical centre. Getting Around
Highway 407 forms the northern edge of the neighbourhood, with an interchange at Ninth Line. York Region Transit routes serve parts of the area, including Highway 7, Ninth Line and 14th Avenue routes and a weekday peak express to Finch GO, but service is less frequent than in central Markham, so most households drive. Mount Joy and Markham GO stations on the Stouffville line are a short drive away.
If you commute downtown, test the trip at rush hour before you buy.
Daily Life in Boxgrove
Weekday mornings bring school drop-offs and commuters heading for Highway 407. Weekends often start with a walk or bike ride into the Rouge, followed by errands at Boxgrove Centre. Summer brings swimming at the Rouge River Community Centre’s outdoor pool, and fall brings colour along the valley and the farm markets of north and east Markham a short drive away. Many residents describe it as a quiet, family-focused community where neighbours know each other.
