Put simply: this is the single most musically stacked weekend in Markham's calendar year. The 29th annual Markham Jazz Festival — one of Ontario's premier free music events — runs Friday August 21 through Sunday August 23 across three outdoor stages on Main Street Unionville, featuring 30+ Grammy and Juno-winning performers across jazz, blues, soul, Afro-Cuban, Latin, and world music. Confirmed artists include Juno Award winner Ranee Lee (Montreal's Queen of Jazz), soul sensation U.N. Jefferson, Latin star Amanda Martinez, and the Afro-Cuban group Joaquín Nuñez & Habana Safari. Then on Saturday August 22, across the city at the Markham Fairgrounds: Kaya Fest Toronto — the globally celebrated reggae festival's inaugural Canadian edition, founded by 9-time Grammy winner Stephen Marley — features all four Marley brothers performing, plus Busta Rhymes, Shabba Ranks, Jully Black, and one of the greatest reggae lineups ever assembled on Canadian soil. Two venues. Two completely different musical worlds. One unforgettable August weekend in Markham.

The 29th Markham Jazz Festival opens Friday evening with its traditional Opening Night Concert — setting the tone for the full weekend with an early evening performance on the Millennium Bandstand and the launch of the Jazz Hot Spot series in the bars and restaurants along Main Street Unionville. Friday night is the most intimate of the three festival days: a smaller crowd than the peak Saturday session, warm August evening air, and the heritage streetscape lit up for the first night of the festival. Bring a lawn chair and arrive early to secure a spot near the Bandstand.

Pears After Dark — the Pears restaurant Jazz Hot Spot on Main Street Unionville — is one of the festival's most beloved traditions. An intimate indoor jazz session in the historic restaurant setting, running Friday evening as part of the broader festival programming. The Jazz Hot Spot schedule (performances in bars and restaurants along Main Street) runs throughout the festival weekend; confirm the full schedule at markhamjazzfestival.com. The full festival programming including complete artist schedule and stage-by-stage lineup is available on the festival website closer to the weekend.

Saturday is the Jazz Festival's biggest day — performances running from noon until 10:15 PM across three outdoor stages plus the Jazz Hot Spot bar and restaurant programme. JUNO Award-winning Artistic Director Ernesto Cervini has programmed a 2026 lineup spanning traditional jazz, vocal jazz, world jazz, modern jazz, blues, salsa, Afro-Cuban, soul, R&B, and reggae — over 30 different shows across the weekend. Saturday alone features more than a dozen performances, making a full day on Main Street Unionville an almost impossibly rich musical experience at no cost.

The three stages — at the Millennium Bandstand, the Varley Art Gallery, and the McKay Art Centre — each carry their own acoustic character and atmosphere. The Bandstand is the flagship outdoor stage; the Varley stage sits against the gallery's beautiful heritage facade; and the McKay stage provides an intimate third option for the wandering festival-goer. Between performances, the street itself is the attraction — boutique shops, restaurant patios, Toogood Pond a short walk away, and the concentrated energy of thousands of people on a warm August Saturday united around live music.

The festival is dog-friendly (good manners required), fully accessible, all ages, rain or shine (tents provided), and entirely free. Free parking is available with a continuous shuttle service from Unionville High School (201 Town Centre Blvd) into the village from 11 AM each day.

Jazz Festival tips: Saturday runs until 10:15 PM — plan to stay for the evening sets, which are the most atmospheric of the weekend under the August sky. The McKay Wine & Beer Garden is a great base between sets. Take the free shuttle from Unionville High School (201 Town Centre Blvd) rather than driving into the village — parking fills fast on Saturday. Kaya Fest — one of the world's most celebrated reggae music festivals, founded by 9-time Grammy Award winner Stephen Marley and named for his father Bob Marley's iconic 1978 album Kaya — makes its historic inaugural Canadian debut at the Markham Fairgrounds on Saturday August 22. Following sold-out editions in Florida since 2017, the festival arrives in Canada for the first time ever, and it arrives with what may be the greatest reggae lineup ever assembled on Canadian soil.

Four Marley brothers performing on the same stage — Stephen, Damian ("Jr. Gong"), Julian, and Ky-Mani Marley — alongside the younger Marley generation: YG Marley, Yohan Marley, Mystic Marley, Hymn Marley, and Zion Marley. Plus multiplatinum hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes. Plus dancehall icon Shabba Ranks. Plus Lila Iké, Jesse Royal, Nina Sky. A Canadian All-Star Showcase features Jully Black (Canada's Queen of R&B, who headlined Markham's own Canada Day celebration in July), JUNO-winning reggae artists Exco Levi and Kirk Diamond, and internationally acclaimed Toronto artist TOBi.

The festival also features sound system royalty — Rory of Stonelove, KC Clarke and Jazzy T of Renaissance Sound, and DJ Shacia Päyne's "Constance Bubble" stage. The Wynn Records Legacy Performance includes Smoke DZA, Statik Selektah, 2DB (Flatbush Zombies), Papoose, King Los and more. The festival runs on the principle of "Education Before Recreation" — using music as a platform for connection, awareness, and positive social impact. All ages. Tickets at kaya-fest.com.

Saturday double-header planning: Both Kaya Fest (Markham Fairgrounds, 2–11 PM) and the Jazz Festival (Main Street Unionville, 12–10:15 PM) run on Saturday — they are about 15 minutes apart by car. A realistic Saturday plan: Jazz Festival from noon to early afternoon → drive to Kaya Fest at Markham Fairgrounds from 2 PM for the evening → return to Jazz Festival for the late sets if you want (both run to 10:00–11:00 PM). Buy Kaya Fest tickets well in advance — this is a historic, first-of-its-kind Canadian lineup that will sell out.

The Jazz Festival's final day has its own distinct energy — a Sunday afternoon on Main Street Unionville with live music on every stage, the McKay Wine & Beer Garden in full swing, the crowds slightly smaller than Saturday's peak, and the season-end feeling of a beautiful August Sunday in one of Ontario's most charming heritage villages. The festival closes approximately 6 PM Sunday — leaving time for an early dinner at one of Main Street Unionville's heritage restaurants as the weekend winds down. Free shuttle from Unionville High School runs continuously from 11 AM.

How to Plan Your Weekend

Two very different musical events across two venues — here are four approaches depending on your priorities.

🎷
For Jazz Lovers
The Full Jazz Festival Weekend

Friday evening: Opening Night Concert at the Millennium Bandstand + Pears After Dark. Arrive early for a spot, stay for the Jazz Hot Spot evening in the bars and restaurants.
Saturday noon–evening: Jazz Festival full day — wander between all three stages. Download the stage schedule from markhamjazzfestival.com. Settle into the McKay Wine & Beer Garden for the late afternoon sets. Stay for the 10:15 PM close.
Sunday: Jazz Festival final day from noon — the quieter, more intimate close of a spectacular weekend.

🌿
For Reggae & Hip-Hop Fans
The Kaya Fest Saturday

Saturday morning: Farmers' Market on Main Street Markham for a quick morning shop before the day begins.
Noon–2 PM: Jazz Festival opening sets on Main Street Unionville — a beautiful warm-up to a big day.
2 PM: Drive to Markham Fairgrounds (15 min) for Kaya Fest gates open. Arrive early to get settled before the performances build through the afternoon and evening.
Evening into night: The four Marley brothers, Busta Rhymes, Shabba Ranks. This is the concert of the summer. Stay through to the 11 PM close. Tickets at kaya-fest.com — buy now.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
For Families
The All-Ages Jazz Weekend

Saturday morning: Farmers' Market. Then Jazz Festival from noon — the Main Street Unionville setting is ideal for families: the Toogood Pond trail is steps away, the stages are spaced out so younger kids can move between them, and everything is free.
Sunday: Jazz Festival Sunday is the most family-friendly session — shorter hours (closes ~6 PM), slightly smaller crowd than Saturday peak, and the Varley Art Gallery stage setting gives kids a different vantage point. Pair with a walk along Toogood Pond and an early Sunday dinner on Main Street.

🎵
For the Music Maximalist
The Full Three-Day Music Weekend

Friday: Jazz Festival Opening Night · Pears After Dark hot spot.
Saturday 12 PM: Jazz Festival opens — two hours on Main Street Unionville before Kaya Fest.
Saturday 2 PM: Kaya Fest at Markham Fairgrounds — the Marleys, Busta Rhymes, Shabba Ranks through 11 PM.
Sunday: Jazz Festival final day, all three stages. McKay Wine & Beer Garden from noon. The Varley stage in the afternoon. One last walk down Main Street Unionville as the summer's most musical weekend closes.
This is a 3-day, two-venue music marathon. Pace yourself.

Neeraj Moolchandani · Kaizen Real Estate Team
"The Jazz Festival has been running on Main Street Unionville for 29 years. That is not a marketing line — that is 29 consecutive summers of world-class free music on a heritage street that was just fully restored. And this year it happens on the same weekend that the inaugural Canadian edition of Kaya Fest brings four Marley brothers and Busta Rhymes to the Markham Fairgrounds. I have been talking about Markham's quality of life for years. This weekend is not an argument I need to make. It makes itself."

If this weekend — four Marley brothers at the Fairgrounds, 30 free jazz acts on Main Street Unionville, and a heritage village alive with music for three days — is making Markham's case, Michael and Neeraj are available to turn that feeling into a real conversation about what ownership here looks like.

If you are in Markham this weekend at the Jazz Festival on Main Street Unionville, or at Kaya Fest at the Fairgrounds, and you want to understand what ownership close to this community looks like, Neeraj can connect that experience to the specific neighbourhoods that put you closest to the life you're experiencing right now.
